Introduction

Wanda Worm is very worried.  She just graduated Creepy Crawly College and now has to go out into the world and make a home for herself.  Her parents are worried that she has not learned what the best type of soil is for her future.  They have decided to hire an up and coming ecologist to help inform Wanda of her choices.

Task

It is up to you to put together a portfolio of information for Wanda to explore.  She has asked that it be put into a Power Point Presentation as well as a game to review what she has learned.  Your job over the next two weeks is to become an expert on the various layers of soil, how soil is formed, and the types of soil that Wanda will find throughout the lands she travels.  You must work with your partner to provide her with enough information to make an educated decision about where she should live.

Process

Day 1:  Today will be a day to preview what you will be working on over the next two weeks.  Before beginning any of the assigned activities, you need to print out a copy of the Fact Finder Packet.  Each person will be required to turn in a completed packet before presenting their group Jeopardy game.  Please take time to read through this packet and discuss your initial responses to the topics and questions with your partner.  DO NOT write any responses at this point.  You will be researching your answers to ensure they are correct before writing them down in your packet.

After previewing the packet, you will be watching an introductory video as a whole class. This video will introduce you to many of the topics that Wanda will need to know about before deciding where to make her home.  (www.unitedstreaming.com  Getting to Know:  Soil/23 minutes)

Day 2:  Today you and your partner will be working to find out the different layers of soil.  You will need to create a drawing on the second page of your Fact Finder Packet.  This drawing should include all the layers of soil as well as labels that define them and what they consist of. There are four layers of the soil that I am looking for.  Make sure you research all the sites listed below in order to get the proper name for each layer.  Use the following links for your research:

the dirt on soil                                    Kings Park Elementary                                         facts about soil                                   info please

Day 3: drawing/diagram in your Fact Finder Packet, you will each need to create a Paint drawing of the same diagram with labels.  After you have created this paint diagram, please save it as "Layers of Soil" within your student folder.  Next, you will need to open up a new PowerPoint Presentation.  The title (and the name that it should be saved under) should be "The Certainties of Soil".  On the second slide, you should insert your diagram and add a caption (at least two complete sentences) explaining the diagram.  Make sure that you do not just repeat your labels, but explain the number of layers and in general how they are different.

Day 4 : Now you are moving on to learning about the different types of soil.  You will complete the table on the third page of your Fact Finder Packet.  Use the links below to find the information needed to complete your chart.

Day 5 :  Today you and your partner will need to create a table in Microsoft Word.  Using the information that you filled in on your worksheet yesterday, you need to recreate this table with your answers.  After doing this, you need to save the table as a JPEG and insert it as a picture (from file) into your PowerPoint on the third slide.

Day 6 :  Watch the videos below to learn about soil, weathering, and erosion.  As you watch the video, answer the questions on the fourth page of your Fact Finder Packet. If you need to rewatch the videos in order to listen for a missed question/answer, please do so.

Soil  Creation                        Weathering                                       Erosion

Day 7:  For the fourth slide of your PowerPoint Presentation, you will need to use the information from the questions that you answered yesterday.  You may choose how you would like to present this information from the following options:

  • Write a paragraph about each  soil creation, weathering, and erosion to share what you have learned.
  • Create a paint drawing for each soil creation, weathering, and erosion.  You must use labels and diagram the process of each of these cycles.
  • Write a creative story following a rock through soil creation, weathering, and erosion.
Day 8 :  For your last day of research, you will need to use the sights above to create your own description of the vocabulary terms found on the fifth page of your Fact Finder Packet.

Day 9 :  Using the definitions that you wrote today, you are going to make a quiz for your reader to take.  Open Smart Notebook and click on the Gallery.  After clicking on Lesson Activity Toolkit, click on Interactive and Multimedia.  Choose from one of the following activities to create your quiz from:

  • Keyword Match
  • Multiple Choice
  • Word Biz
  • Word Guess

Using your definitions, complete the activity and save it as "Soil Quiz" in your folder.  On the sixth page of your PowerPoint Presentation, insert a picture of your choice from Clip Art (make sure it makes sense with a soil presentation), and complete the following steps.

  • Highlight the picture
  • Click on Insert
  • Click on Hyperlink
  • Locate your "Soil Quiz" and click okay

Save your PowerPoint, reopen it and ensure that you are able to access your quiz.

You are official finished with your PowerPoint.  Your next step will be to create a Jeopardy game with the group assigned by your teacher.

Day 10 :  Using the frames (page 6 of your Fact Finder Packet), divide the topics up among each member in the group.  Each person is responsible for creating the 5 questions and answers for their topic.  They will share these with their group members before the end of time today.  You are only responsible for writing the questions and answers you came up with.

*******Please make sure that the questions and answers you create come from your PowerPoint Presentation/Fact Finder Packet and focus on the facts you have learned through this webquest*******

Days 11 and 12:  For these two days, you and your group will create your PowerPoint Presentation to share with the class.  Using the Jeopardy Outline page you completed yesterday (each person will need to have their packet to create a completed outline), you will type in the questions and answers in the Jeopardy Template.  Please save your work as "Soil Jeopardy" in your file.  We will copy this game to everyone's flash drive that is in your group.
Days 13 and 14:  It is now time to share your Jeopardy Game and view those of your classmates.
